There is a version of this story that is only about decline, and it would be the easy one to write. The sprints are shorter now. The half-yard that once turned a defender into a spectator has narrowed to inches. But to reduce these years to subtraction is to misunderstand what made him in the first place.

The Body Was Never the Point

We always credited the athleticism, because athleticism is visible and obsession is not. The truth is that the leaping headers and the dead-ball technique were downstream of something less photogenic: a refusal, renewed daily, to be ordinary. That engine does not slow at the same rate as the legs.

You can coach talent. You cannot coach the man who treats every training session as if someone is trying to take his place — because someone always is.

A former teammate, on condition the quote outlive the friendship

What you see now is a player solving the game with information instead of acceleration. He arrives a fraction earlier because he reads the pass a fraction sooner. The goals that look scrappy are, in fact, the most expensive ones — they are paid for in positioning learned over twenty years.

Greatness in its first act is loud and obvious. In its last act it is quiet, and it asks more of the people watching. The goals will keep slowing. The argument they used to make on his behalf is now ours to make for him.
